Create natural dyes and pigments using the diverse elements found in our local watershed!

Dyeing with the Watershed is an immersive 2-day workshop that explores various natural dyeing processes using plants and minerals sourced from the local watershed. This workshop will provide students with hands-on experience in creating dyes and prints using natural elements, while also exploring the rich cultural and ecological histories associated with these elements in the region.

Saturday, November 2nd:
On Saturday the workshop will take place at a TBD location within 10 miles of EVFAC. Once confirmed, the location details will be posted on the class page and communicated to enrolled students. We will gather plant materials for dye pots and eco-prints, and discuss the cultural and ecological context of the plants in the region.

Lunch: please bring a picnic lunch. We will be eating in the field.

Sunday, November 3rd:
On Sunday, the workshop will continue at EVFAC. Participants will explore printing and dyeing with materials gathered on Saturday, as well as others brought by the instructor. There will be a variety of mordant baths to explore further the range of color different natural materials can produce. Cotton and silk fabrics will be provided; however, participants who work with wool and other natural fibers are encouraged to bring that to experiment with as well.

Lunch: Potluck! And maybe a "kitchen sink" dye bath....

By the end of the workshop, participants will have created a series of plant ID swatches. These fabrics and fibers, dyed and printed with pigments from natural materials, will help illustrate the colors found in our local landscape.

All materials are included in this course.

Please bring a notebook.
