Learn to dye wool, and “paint” with wet felt with visiting artist Taylor Painter-Wolfe!

In this workshop, Taylor will run the participants through the various processes she uses to create her beautiful felted fiber art work. By the end of this three day class, students will have made their own unique piece of art.

Taylor takes inspiration for her work from satellite images, aerial landscape photography, as well as close up pictures of interesting textures found in nature. For this workshop, participants will come with images of a landscape of their choosing or any other materials or photographs they would like to use as inspiration. 

Students will learn how to make felted wool using wet felting techniques. Each student will start with a backing piece as a canvas. Students will then make the felt to dye and use as “paints.”

Using their desired landscape imagery to guide them, students will cut their dyed felt and glue it onto their “canvas” in a way similar to creating a mosaic. Students will learn to create texture to add three dimensional aspects to their felted artwork, by layering the felt, using reverse applique, free motion stitching, and needle felting.  Students will also learn to integrate a sewing element to the creation of the piece.

About Taylor Painter-Wolfe: Taylor Painter-Wolfe is a fiber artist and art teacher from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She majored in fiber art at The Kansas City Art Institute where she first began working with felted wool. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2003 and later attended The University of Washington where she earned a Masters of Education in early childhood special education. Taylor now divides her time between making and showing her work and teaching art classes to children and adults in various galleries, arts organizations, and schools throughout Oklahoma and beyond. She creates what she describes as “abstract landscapes” out of felted wool using traditional fiber art techniques such as felting, dyeing, applique, and stitching. Taylor’s work is inspired by aerial photographs, satellite images, and her own photography of natural environments. She has had multiple solo shows in and around Tulsa and her work regularly appears in group shows locally and nationally.

Class cancellation policy: Class cancellations 7 days or less prior to first day of class will receive no refund. 8-13 days before beginning of class, students will receive an 80% refund. 14 days or more before beginning of class: Full refund.
