WickerWorks: Introduction to Basketmaking
with Gina Telcocci

This fun two day workshop covered introduction to basket-weaving. Beginning with reed, students learned basic steps of the “stake and strand” technique. They made two baskets, one each day. Students learned two ways of beginning a basket, how to manipulate the shape as it develops, and how to end a basket. In addition to making baskets in class, they also did some playful exercises and collaborative projects to loosen up and spark your creative juices.

About Gina:

She has received numerous grants and awards, from, among others, the Pollock Krasner Foundation, Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, and the City of Oakland, California. Her public commissions include University of New Mexico/Los Alamos; Potrero Hill Library, San Francisco; and Walnut Creek Library, Walnut Creek, California. Telcocci taught Sculpture and 3-Dimensional Design at Santa Rosa Junior College in California, in addition to varied workshops for all ages over the years. Ms. Telcocci’s work combines an affinity for the textures and physicality of raw organic (willow, seedpods, mud) or otherwise humble materials (wire, found wood, junk) with a keen instinct for refinement. After decades of splitting her time between a home in Oakland, CA, and her beloved studio on the Pecos River, Telcocci permanently relocated to Santa Fe in 2022.
