In this workshop, participants will recycle unwanted T-shirts to create traditional Japanese cloth sandals, known as "nuno-zori."
These sandals are gentle on the feet and offer exceptional comfort. Through this eco-friendly, hands-on experience, we aim to promote a sustainable lifestyle.
Class Curriculum:
Material Preparation: Select unwanted T-shirts and learn how to cut them into fabric strips.
Basic Weaving Techniques: Use the fabric strips to weave the base of the sandals, mastering the fundamental weaving techniques.
Creating the Thong (Nose Strap): Craft the thong using braiding techniques and attach it to the sandal base.
Finishing and Adjustment: Shape the completed sandals and adjust them for optimal comfort, tailoring them to individual foot sizes.
Materials Needed: No specific materials are required; all necessary supplies will be provided.
Notes: This workshop is suitable for beginners.
Participants will engage in an eco-friendly crafting experience, contributing to a sustainable lifestyle.
Materials Instructor will provide: Fabric strips: Pre-cut strips of fabric for weaving the base of the sandals. Thong fabric: Fabric pieces for creating the thong (nose strap) of the sandals. Weaving tools: Necessary tools for the weaving process.
Materials students may provide: If you have any unwanted T-shirts, please bring them with you.
Eri Yost: “Samurai Slippers” is an artist who creates modern adaptations of traditional Japanese zori sandals using recycled T-shirt materials. Her unique techniques and designs are not only eco-friendly but also combine practicality with beauty. Additionally, the sandals are known for their exceptional comfort, making them highly popular among many people. In this class, participants can enjoy learning the art of zori-making while discovering new possibilities with recycled materials.
This class will only run with a minimum of three participants. Students will be notified if the class does not fill.
Class COVID-19 policy: There are no COVID-19 restrictions for this class. Please do not come to class if you are feeling sick, and it is always advised to wear a mask if you are comfortable doing so.
Class cancellation policy: Please note: All Class cancellations are charged a $15 processing fee in addition to the following policy: Class cancellations 7 days or less prior to first day of class will receive no refund. 8-13 days before beginning of class, students will receive an 80% refund. 14 days or more before beginning of class: Full refund.
